Historic Collett Park Pathway

The Collett Park Pathway represents a new, single-phase, 1.6-mile (8,450 lineal feet) construction development of The National Road Heritage Trail Greenway System in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Collett Park Pathway will serve as a dedicated, multi-use, non-motorized corridor that will directly link Terre Haute’s trail and greenway system with:

·         Indiana State University (1,630 employees)
·         Union Hospital (2,255 employees)
·         McMillan Adult Day Care Center
·         Two Terre Haute Housing Authority Public Housing Units
·         Terre Haute’s Memorial Park
·         Hamilton Mental Health Center
·         Hamilton Center Child Services & Healthy Beginnings
·         Union Hospital Child Development Center
·         Union Hospital Hux Cancer Center
·         Terre Haute Bone and Joint Center
·         Oubache Elementary School (Title I Designation)
·         Lakeview Wetland Area (New Terre Haute Park Site Under Development)
·         Collett Park Neighborhood (National Register of Historic Places)
·         Collett Park (National Register of Historic Places)
·         Collett Park Pavilion (National Register of Historic Places)

The Collett Park Pathway will be a major resource to both the transportation and recreational systems of Terre Haute given its connection to The National Road Heritage Trail and its parallel relief orientation to the heavily traveled U.S. 41 corridor (see attached location map).

The National Road Heritage Trail is an Indiana Visionary Trail as noted in Hoosiers on the Move: The Indiana State Trails, Greenways and Bikeways Plan.

The Collett Park Pathway will incorporate a context-sensitive design with the installation of a minimum 10-foot wide trail. Ornamental trees plantings will promote aesthetic appearance and serve as a traffic calming mechanism.

The Collett Park Pathway will be located entirely within existing public right-of-way and incorporate a proven and highly successful design standard used within Terre Haute’s Trail and Greenway System.

The City of Terre Haute anticipates that construction of the Collett Park Pathway funded through a 100% grant of $900,000.00 from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Outdoor Recreation, will begin in October 2008, given a proven design standard, normal trail design development, environmental and technical review time frames, public input, and contract bidding.
