Mayor Brandon Sakbun established the City of Terre Haute Mayor's Youth Council in 2024. After a successful first cohort, he is seeking applicants for the 2025/2026 school year!
The program is free and open to juniors and seniors who attend a Vigo County School Corporation high school.
The Mayor’s Youth Council is seeking students of outstanding character to be a voice and represent young people in city government. Council responsibilities will include advising the Mayor on issues relevant to youth, learning about municipal government and the importance of civic participation, and discussing and educating their peers on council initiatives. Members will perform community outreach, participate on advisory boards as a non-voting member, and organize service projects relating primarily to youth.
The Council will have 1-2 regular monthly meetings along with 2 advisory board meetings per semester. The Council members will also be required to complete 10 hours of community service. In addition, the Mayor’s Youth Council may attend events and activities related to their initiatives and responsibilities.
