Position Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):
- Inspect and condemn all buildings in the city that area hazard to the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Terre Haute.
- Inspect all properties that have fire damage
- Keep organized files on all condemned property that include condemnation reports, photographs, condition of property, copies of any permits and any other paperwork related to the property
- Perform follow up and final inspections of condemned properties
- Maintain contact with owners of condemned properties until condemned structures are either demolished or repaired
- Initiate hearings for property owners who fail to demolish or repair property with the department of redevelopment
- Check construction being performed to ensure proper permits have been issued and posted
- Perform foundation, framing, and other permit related inspections
- Assist with zoning compliance and enforcement
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints via email, phone, or 311
- Return any phone calls received while in the field
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Must have thorough knowledge of construction techniques and terminology
- Must be able to interact with public in a professional manner
- Must have good written communication skills
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Training: high school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Must have extensive experience in building trades
Working Conditions: Both office and fieldwork, including unsafe structures.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to operate vehicle
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to withstand all weather
